There are some people who are hypo-allergenic to sunlight and must avoid sunlight at all costs. Such people survive without sunlight. Additionally, people in high lattitudes have entire months of the year without sunlight and they continue to live. For most people, though, being out of the sun for extended periods of time leads to depression.
