Yes, you can take a water bottle on an airplane, you just can't take one through security. Or more specifically, you can take an empty water bottle through security, fill it on the other side, and then take it on the airplane with you. Many folks are doing this these days rather than being gouged $3.50 for a bottle of water within the secure area.

I had my empty Nalgene bottles confiscated at Paris CDG. They said it was to stop people reconstituting powder into water. But they could still buy bottles on the other side of security. Stupid
