Most colleges and universities offer online classes. The first half of the four-year program is taken up with general education requirements (science, math, English Composition, history, psychology, etc.). While some specific courses will be required (English Composition, certain courses in Psychology, Art, Music, etc), you will be able to choose from a selection for many requirements. Those classes should be no problem to get online from a college of your choice (not just those offering online instruction, but regular colleges). When you start your education requirements, you might encounter problems. Most methods courses require that you go into the classroom and teach a lesson, create materials to use, etc. You'll need to check into whether or not those classes are offerred online. There's no reason you couldn't get started with the required courses, though. Here's some free advice: Before you start, get as much information as you can. Check out several programs and colleges. I don't know how good or bad the online colleges are, but I would get my degree from a regular college taking their online courses. If you are going to get your general education from one school and your education classes at another, make sure the general education classes will transfer. Also, check into what the projected needs are going to be for teachers at the time you expect to graduate. If you are going to get a degree in elementary education, check into minors that are available in specialty areas (reading instruction, special education, etc). Having one or more minors can greatly enhance your chances of getting a position. If you are going to get a degree in middle school or high school education, check into projected shortages and consider going into one of those areas. I think science and math teachers are almost always needed. Look into financial aid, grants and scholarships that are available and fill out the FAFSA to find out if you qualify for government aid. It can be filled out online, but there are deadlines to meet, so fill it out early. You can also find little-known sources for scholarships and grants by doing a search online. Don't get loans if you don't absolutely have to. They add up and can really be a pain to pay back. You probably already know to do all of that, but it never hurts to be sure. ~Deb
