That depends on whether you mean taking both at the same time to increase the effectiveness or alternating between the two.

If you're looking for something really strong, then sure you can take them together. Nothing will happen, except you're going to feel an intense euphoric/sleepy feeling until it knocks you out. And you may wake up feeling drowsy.

If you are looking to alternate two different medications so they don't wear off so quickly, they're a great combination. Assuming both work for you separately. I take sonata for the majority of the time, and ambien about once or twice a week. Because they are similar drugs but are chemically different, you can rotate them and maintain their effects. My only complaint is that sonata is stronger than ambien, so depending on which you take more often, the ambien might become too weak a drug. But as long as you don't take sonata for too long, it's not noticeable.

Otherwise the drugs have no interactions, just be careful with the doses. Don't take both them if you haven't taken either before, and make sure your body can handle the combined doses.

I took 10mg of ambien a little while ago, 45 minutes after it I drank a Diet Coke. Now I have a pretty decent head high and I'm not as sleepy as when I started to notice I was becoming, before I drank the coke.
