What test is used to check the level of medication in your system while using a duragesic patch?
I have been using Duragesic (fentanyl patches) for severe chronic pain caused by RSD since September 14, 2002. When my primary care doctor used a urine drug test to find out if I was really using my Duragesic patches, the test came back negative, even thoigh I really WAS using my patches. However, a blood test did show the level of fentanyl present in my blood. The funny thing is that the level of fentanyl in my blood is higher when I use my 125 mcg brand name patches from Janssen than when I use my 125 mcg generic patches from Sandoz, Mylan, and other generic manufacturers, whose names I do not remember.

Can you take promethazine while using a Fentanyl patch?

Is Fentanyl patches stronger than oxycodone?
Extremely - a single 100mcg/hr Fentanyl patch (good for 48-72 hrs depending on the patient) is equivalent to an overall Oxycodone dosage of 202mg per day, or about 9mg Oxycodone every hour for 24 hours. The average Oxycodone dose is about 10-20mg every 6 hours. Fentanyl is the strongest opiate on the planet at 100x stronger than oral morphine. While it is normally used as an anesthetic, it's used in transdermal patches as a timed-release pain med for severe pain patients.

How does percocet interact with Fentanyl patch?
Duragesic (Fentanyl Transdermal) patches are used for Primary Chronic Pain; they last for up to 3 days depending on the patient and tolerance level. For example, I'm one of a small percentage of the population that only gets 48 hours from my patches, and that's due to my high tolerance level - I've been using them for 9 years. Percocet (Oxycodone and Tylenol) is used for Breakthrough Pain - Breakthrough Pain is that pain which the patient feels after activity causes pain being controlled by the patches to exceed the pain controlling capability of the Fentanyl. Percocet, being an Acute pain drug, is used to compensate for the temporary increase in pain. The combination of Fentanyl patches and Percocet is very common - I myself have used the combination in varying strengths and doses for a very long time. While I'm currently using the strongest doses available, at times I've had to increase my dosages and augment them with other opiates such as Demerol and MS Contin.

Is it safe to try and conceive while husband is on the Fentanyl patch?
As far as concerns with Fentanyl transfer to a female during conception, it's a non-issue. The only real concerns are for nursing mothers using Fentanyl themselves, since Fentanyl is excreted in breast milk. No congenital defects have ever been reported by women who were using Fentanyl during pregnancy.
What is Fentanyl 100 mcg?
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain medication. Opioids are often referred to as narcotics and morphine and oxycodone are two of the best known drugs of this type. While some of these medications are derrived from opium poppies, others like fentanyl are entirely synthetic (man-made). Fentanyl is among the strongest opioids being approximately 80 times the strength of an equal dose of morphine. For this reason, its therapeutic dosage is generally measured in micrograms (denoted as ug or mcg). So, fentanyl 100 mcg is a particular dosage of fentanyl. However, I think it's likely the question may be referring to a particular preparation of this medication, most likely the fentanyl patch. The fentanyl patch is used to administer around-the-clock delivery of fentanyl which is released through the patch and absorbed by the skin. It comes in various strengths from 12mcg-100mcg. The dosage size refers to the amount of fentanyl delivered each hour. So, the 100 mcg patch would deliver 100 mcg of fentanyl each hour. Each patch lasts for 72 hours. Fentanyl patches are very strong and intended for use by patients who are already on some type of opioid medication. If an opioid-naive person (someone who does not take opioid medication regularly) used a fentanyl patch of any strength, they could very easily suffer an over-dose and, without rapid medical intervention, die. Fentanyl should only be used with a prescription from, and under the medical supervision of a medical doctor.
How does Fioricet with Codeine interact with Fentanyl patches?
Since Fioricet/Codeine is a Schedule 3 drug (meaning not even close to the potency level of Fentanyl) it doesn't really affect the therapeutic levels. However, using anything that depresses the system further (it contains Butalbital), if you're not tolerant enough it can have an adverse effect on your breathing. It really depends on your tolerance level, meaning how long you've been using each drug. Each works a bit differently than the other, so they don't typically affect each other directly. In my own experience, I've not noticed much difference when using it with my own patches. In my case, I use Fiorinal w/Codeine, which is the aspirin equivalent, with Duragesic, having used Duragesic for 10 years and Fiorinal w/Codeine for 20 years. I use Fiorinal for migraines, while Fentanyl and Percocet I use for long term chronic pain. Fentanyl or Percocet doesn't help my migraines, and Fiorinal doesn't affect my spinal pain.
