Be careful. I found out later from the pharmacist on call with pain management that (1) with the symptoms I had, I should have called 911 ! and (2) to take it the two three hours apart from each other.

When I first got Tizanidine and Tramadol (from pain management doctor) I took both as prescribed and with my dinner at home. As I was almost finishing my dinner, it was as if the room was gradually getting darker around the "edges" of my vision and as if I had been given some sort of sleeping pill. I told my husband the meds were putting me to sleep and I just had to go lie down.

I had about 20 feet to walk to the bedroom and I swear, I felt like my feet weighed a TON, like I had lead feet, or magnetic feet to a magnetic floor.

I sat on the edge of my bed about to lie down and realized that I was having a hard time breathing. I realized I was having to concentrate on opening up my chest wall to let the air in. I called in my husband and (he said I was barely audible and mumbling) told him I was having a hard time breathing and to keep and eye on me, please. The next thing I knew, it was the next day. I was lucky I didn't do a "Heath Ledger."

I should have called 911 and normally I would have done that had it been someone other than me having the problem. But, I was obviously not thinking clearly! All I could think of was that I just had to lie down and concentrate on my chest wall to let the air in. Then I drifted off to sleep -- and not death, fortunately.

I am 51, female, have cervical and lumbar spinal disc related pain, a cervical disc indenting the thecal sac, all cervical discs herniated to some degree, three in the lumbar and one fully extruded, osteoarthritis, scoliosis with years of heavy work on top of it working in theatre as a painter, was a runner for years (that I was told didn't help), now about 30 pounds overweight, but otherwise....in pretty good health!! I am not in as much pain as I think I could be, so that is good. I am lucky that the bad pain isn't constant--when it is bad, it is bad though. I am in some pain all the time, but, hey, who isn't at 50?

I tried it again after talking with the pharmacist by taking just 1/2 of the Tizanidine three hours after the Tramadol. It still affected my breathing.

I tried 1/4 of the Tizanidine then, 3 hours after Tramadol, and I noticed nothing -- not even any pain relief with its relaxant help. Since then, I've gone back to Flexeril.

I was taking Darvocet and Flexeril as my main pain meds. I had to stop taking prescription anti-inflammatories due to nausea. And had to stop nortryplitine (for nerve tingling and pins and needles that got to be very strong and distracting and painful at times) due to severe constipation, almost IBS-like symptoms.

I wanted to try something other than Flexeril because it zonks me for a loop for a day the next day--just by taking one early in the evening before. I am a lightwieght with these muscle relaxants, that is for sure. I have found that 1/4 of a Flexeril at the same time as two Tramadol doesn't affect my breathing and does help with the pain cycle.

Ice is a big friend too, as is practicing breathing "into" the pain when it is really bad -- as per some mindfulness training I went through at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.

The potential harmfulness and effectiveness of combining Tramadol with Tizanidine truly depends on the dosage and the individual. I have been under the regime of Tizanidine (6MG/per day) and Tramadol (100MG/per day) for 4 years - I have taken them both at the same time: I have experienced zero side effects from the combination. My tolerance level happens to be high concerning medications of this type - the likelihood of experiencing side effects for someone like me is typically less than that of someone with lower tolerances. Of course, dosage level is the other relative factor in one's experience of the combination of these two medications.

Yes, tramadol (Ultram) can be taken with Tylenol (and actually is made in just such a combination product called Ultracet).
