Amitryptyline is sometimes used in chronic pain conditions, where as little as 5 - 20 mg at bedtime can, for example, help reduce teeth grinding or jaw clenching, along with stress reduction. Dr. Davidson at UCSD, for example, says that taking more is not helpful, because of the side effect of sleepiness. amitriptyline is a controlled substance and is therefore a doctor prescribed drug. And the recommended dose should be on the pill bottle.
