You can... but the majority of people would not want to because of:

A: rabies

B: They are nocturnal

and

C: They rarely make contact with humans, and you wouldn't have a good relationship with it.

Actually, only some states will allow raccoons as pets, most not at all, & the ones that do require a special permit or rehabilitation license. Yes, there is a chance of rabies, as with most animals, & they are nocturnal, but they can be given rabies & distemper shots just like dogs & cats. Also, they can actually bond quite well with humans, but it takes time & work. They are a full time job even after they are tamed because they are so active & curious about everything. They will open cabinets, spill things, & "steal" things. They are also messy eaters. They can give you a lot of pleasure & love, but you have to be very dedicated to them as well. Just something to consider when making your decision.

i agree only some states allow it because it is illegal in some states unless you have a license to keep wild animals

In most areas it is illegal to hold wildlife as pets. It is best to check with local law enforcement (game wardens, animal control officers) to find out local regulations. However, as a person who has raised many, many orphaned baby raccoons for a local wildlife rescue group for many years, I strongly urge you NOT to attempt to keep a raccoon as a pet. They do not make good pets and you will be exposing yourself to potential deadly parasites and diseases, not to mention very sharp teeth and claws.

Raccoons are never completely tame and can quickly turn vicious. They do not make good pets. I have raised many, many orphaned raccoons for a wildlife rescue group. While they are very young they may be quite affectionate and easy to handle but once they become adolescents all bets are off.

Wild animals rarely make good pets, and though young raccoons are cute, they can bite and scratch severely when grown.

No, while raccoons can be somewhat tamed they are still wild animals and cannot be trained as one would do with a dog.
