Also give them a letter with the draft details (on whose name you took the draft, the date, draft number, amount, payable city etc) and tell them that the draft is lost. As a first step, ask them to block the draft so that, the draft cannot be cashed by someone. As the next step, ask them to either cancel the draft and pay you money or re-issue a fresh draft.

You don't. Only the bank will be able to tell. Even so, DO NOT release any goods until the draft has been 'given value' or you are able to 'draw on the funds'. Clearing means something different in bank speak. This process usually takes 3-5 working days. Don't risk it, it's bound to be a large purchase if you need a bankers draft for it.
