Dogs can learn to recognize about 50 words. The most intelligent dog knows over a 1000 words, but that is not typical. They can learn by watching others. They understand pointing or will look where you are looking better then chimpanzees.

First, you must define what you mean by "intelligent". Defining dog intelligence as working & obedience intelligence, and setting the measuring criteria as (1) learning a new command in 5 or less repetitions, and (2) obeying a single command at least 95% of the time ... the top winner is ... the Border Collie, which has been known to have a working vocabulary of over 200 words!

These top ten fall into the category of "Brightest Dogs", and the criteria for their working/obedience intelligence is (1) they learn new commands with 5 or less repetitions, and (2) they obey the first command 95% of the time or better. Note that Labraddoodles have been known to understand more than 200 human words. That is exactly what i think to it depends on the dogs ability to learn and the persons teaching prospective!

Also note that Labradoodles AREN'T a real breed of dog, they are designer dogs, not recognized by the AKC. Border Collies are the smartest breed of dog, having the capability to learn over 1,000 commands! A Border Collie named Chaser knows 1,022, making it the smartest dog (this one dog) known.

They are very fantastic. They are also great with babies with gentle nature.

Border Collies are definitely the rocket scientist of dogs, but make sure you do your homework before getting one- or thinking of getting one- because they'll use they re smarts against you, but if trained correctly are a very loving family member.

Adding to that, they are easily bored and almost always need to be doing something. Border collies may be intelligent and easy to train but they are a handful. They have a bunch of energy and need to be kept entertained.

Sorry, but this is complete nonsense. I have read many books about dog intelligence and dog-breed intelligence. There are many factors.

For example:

1) the humans definition of "intelligence". We can interpret actions of dogs as "intelligence" when the action is in fact a result of: obedience, training, instinct, specialization, interest in impressing a human, etcetra.

2) It is a VERY difficult thing for humans to gauge the intelligence of other species...

3) Even harder to compare intelligence between breed of ONE species. Species have very similar intelligence...

4) The effect of what breeds are trained for out of human tastes , stereotypes, and human traditions. (example: someone gets a pit bull because they want a fighter, and then they don't train the dog to bring out its intelligence. Then someone uses this pit-bull as proof of the IQ of this breed)

It is true that the Border collie is a very trainable breed and works very well with humans and has a lot of instincts that have been fine-tuned to be used for what humans like then to do. (Herd sheep, etc). But should this be the definition of intelligence? If so, then by all means, call this breed intelligent. But I think its safe to say that it is ridiculous to use such criteria as proof that one breed is most intelligent and another is the least intelligent. I personally know problem-solving situations that Afghans can solve in seconds and a Border will never solve. (No, i don't own and have never owned an Afghan). The world record for jumping-rope is held by a Saluki, which is VERY closely related to the Afghan. (No, I don't own a Saluki nor have ever owned one.)

No. More often it's the humans that are more stupider than the dog, and consequently ruin it by teaching it bad manners, not socializing it, or not understanding what the dog is really trying to tell them in dog language.
