Securing the anchor, tying the boat to a mooring bouy, tying a small boat alongside, hauling or dropping sail, securing the setting of the sail, AND an ancient method of determining how FAST the boat was traveling... they would tie knots at certain intervals, then drag the rope in the water, measuring it against the side of the boat, to figure how much time it had taken to move so far. This would help the navigators to plot their (estimated) location. And to tie their shoes!
