Yes, in some cases. Many US customs agents only ask for U.S. identification, if you're driving or walking across the border. Since a passport is only ever issued to a citizen, an expired passport would be rebuttable proof of citizenship, which is better than having a driver's license (which can be obtained by a resident alien, in some states).

a valid US passport, but if you are a citizen of the US they cannot refuse you entry. They will give you a hard
time and may even hold you for a few hours but eventually they will let you in.

∙ 14y agono, infact they can refuse you if you even have less then 6 months left on a valid passport. Expired is expired, they will not let you across with it. Time to renew, and keep up on it too, never know when you'll need it! best of luck
