Brass, not gold, and yes, they're ordinary circulation coins that can be spent anywhere. There have been billions of them made, including the new Presidential dollars.

If some clerk refuses to accept it ask to see their manager and ask why they haven't trained their employees to recognize standard U.S. currency.
