No. You can use the charging cable. Most chargers are designed for a Dual Shock 3 to sit and be charged and the PS move or Navigation controllers need a charger designed for there shape or a system that uses the mini USB connection cable

If your PS3 does not have the updates you will have to download and install the updates before you can use the PS3 Move with your system.
