Yes, you can connect a Wii Remote to a Wii U. It's required for Wii Mode, and to play any Wii games that require it. Setting up a Wii Remote on the Wii U is done the same way you do it on the Wii - hold down the red buttons on the Wii U and Wii Remote until they connect.

∙ 11y agoWii remotes are supported in certain Wii U games, such as Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U, with some games requiring them for certain features. A Wii remote is also required to access the Wii menu.
Wii remotes, however, cannot be used on the Wii U menu as it and other system-level apps require the gamepad.
