You can if you need to, but I would not recommend doing this for a whole tattoo. Not that there is anything wrong with it per se, but you are taking at risk unneeded trauma to the skin with this configuration as opposed to using a nice tight Round Liner.
to do the outline on a tattoo you need a needle called a liner for instance you could use a 14 round liner. now for shading you need a shader which is another kind of needle now you can use a 14 round shader or a 14 flat mag shader that answer your question and an p.s you can get a needle any size they can go as small as 1 all the way up to a 49 flat and so on
You can use a flat/ magnum or practice with liners on pig skin. Either way, it takes practice
Something that is a circular knit is knotted on a circular needle and has no seems. Something that is a flat knit is knotted on separate needles and the pieces of the garment have to be sewn together at the end.
Smoke a cigarette before u do the tattoo also try to keep ur other foot flat in the ground besides the one u used to press the pedal ..
If you want to replace the needle on your sewing machine, you unscrew the thumbscrew behind and above the needle (with the presser foot down) and remove the old needle. Then hold the new needle under there with the point down and insert it into the slot. The slot is usually half round, half flat so you have to be sure the flat part of the needle matches the flat part of the slot. When it is in there, you just finger tighten the thumbscrew and you are ready to go.

Flat? Do you mean in a row or staggered (mag)? I don't use actual flats but mags are best for gray shading and blending color, lose rounds are good for uniform flat color.
Do you mean single file or magnum needles? No matter, tiny circles my friend.
If your doing a full color tattoo, meaning just one shade i usually use a round shader, if you want to do transaction from light to dark i use a flat mag. Sizes all depends on what your comfortable with, for a large piece or tribal i use a 25rmag and a 5rs for tighter space. for the tip i use the same liner to fill in. but just try and see what works best for you. This is my advice I have 6 years of experience currently working as a tattoo artist. Some artist will agree or disagree with my advice.
Shaders are usually called by the name of their configuration. most coil machines use 3 needles as their liners, then they move to a flat shader then on to round shaders with more needles for higher concentration of ink injection.

An amalgam tattoo is a flat bluish-grey lesion of the oral mucosa wihch results from amalgam particles going into the soft tissue.
A 4' x 8' sheet of plywood will not lay flat in the Magnum. It may be angled but will scuff or scratch other surfaces.
would a tire go flat on a car if you didn't have needle valve
My stock 250 does 110 on the flat. Downhill? buried needle so who knows.
