ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line) is a protocol that you ISP (internet service provider) use it is a analogue signal. cable normally is a cat 5e or cat 6 in to the modem and is a digital connection (much faster)

Don't use a cable modem for dial up. Use the modem in your computer or an external voice/fax modem for dial up. If you want to share the internet connection with other computers use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Windows. Search windows in Information in Help and Support Center for the Internet Connection Sharing setup in Windows XP. To use ICS you will have to logically connect all of the devices into one network. Hopefully all of your computers will self assign an IP address that will let them talk to each other then all you need are network cables and a switch. You can also use the swith (LAN) portion of your cable modem as a router to assign IP addresses (DHCP) to the other computers to ensure the other computers are on the same network.

No. The PS3 can only have a wired connection with an ethernet cable. The only other connection that is possible is WiFi. The PS3 can only connect to the internet with WiFi or ethernet cable no other type connection is possible. You can not use the HDMI or USB port to connect the PS3 to the internet. I do not believe a router can be connected to the internet cable without a modem or that you can have cable internet without a modem

What is the function of splitter?
Splitters typically have 3 labels: ADSL, Phone and Line. To use a splitter you connect your telephone devices (eg phone, fax or answering machine) to the connection labelled phone, your ADSL modem to the ADSL connection and the line to the wall socket. If you have other telephone wall sockets in the property on the same telephone line you will need to plug in filters between the phone and the wall socket.In addition to the user installable spliter in the photograph above, you can have a central splitter (see right) installed by a telephone technician. A central splitter is installed on the telephone line before the first phone point in the property. Thus the central splitter protects the all the phone exensions from the ADSL signal.
