You can....preferably in worst case scenarios.

Since bike engines run at higher RMP's they require different characteristics of the oil so it is not recommended.

What oil do you put in a 1978 Honda Gold Wing?

Since this is an old bike the engine is likely to be worn. You can try single grade W 40 oil. If the engine is good and not so worn, use multi grade 10 W 40 oil, intended for motorcycles. Don´t use normal car engine oil. If the exhaust smoke is very black, then this indicates you should use a W 40 oil. However, if you are driving the bike in a cold climate, then use the 10 W 40 oil. Change oil every 2 or 3 thousand kilometers if the engine is very worn out.

Can you use car motor oil in a Harley Davidson?

In a pinch, you can use car oil to get you home which I had to do once. Once you get home you need to change the oil to the proper type. Car oil is usually around 5w30 (the first number is the coldest you would run your engine and the last number is the hottest in celsius). A motorcycle engine is not liquid cooled so the engine runs much hotter meaning you need to use an oil that won't break down at higher temperatures, around a 20w50 oil. That's why it takes a little longer to warm up a bike than a car, the oil is much thicker and needs to get heated up before it runs smooth.
