Echo location, also called SONAR. This is just like the pinging you hear in a submarine movie
Bats use echo location, they track down sounds of prey by their sound waves.
Bats have a very good sense of hearing since they are blind. They use echo location to determine where to go without getting into trouble.
They HEAR using their ears but they use the echoes of the sounds they make to build a "sound picture" of their surroundings. This is used to avoid collisions and to catch prey. This use of sound and echoes is called "echo location".

No only bats use echolocation
John could hear the echo of his canteen hitting rocks as it rolled down the canyon wall.
They use echo-location to find their way away, or in dire circumstances (like protecting their young) they will use echolocation to stun their attacker. Humans and their boats have been attacked by Narwhals because they are perceived as predators (which they often have been).
