You can drink it, but it's not good for you. If there is a high salinity in the water it will actually draw the water out of your body to dilute the amount in your stomach. This will result in dehydration and all it's the effects, which can be potentially fatal. Fresh water contains less than 0.5 grams of salt per litre. Salt sea water has more than 50 grams of salt per litre.
