Salt can be used to get out pot stains, but its pretty much only effective as an abrasive cleaner. The solid crystals of salt will act sort of like scouring powder to remove whatever they are rubbed on. Stainless steel pots aren't supposed to stain, and if one wishes to clean them effectively, the best approach is an abrasive one. Steel wool works, and has long been a favorite. The abrasive pads (they're usually green), either by themselves or adhered to a sponge, that one can pick up at any grocery, hardware or large variety store are a good bet. They work quite well on aluminum, too, but if one is treating aluminum, there are some other tricks that can be applied when cleaning the vessel. I find there is nothing quite like cooking up a batch of spaghetti sauce in an aluminum pot to clean it. The acid of the tomatoes works like magic to remove stains. It's a chemical (the reaction of the acid) approach rather than a mechanical (scouring) approach that has been passed around for a long time. Water in which cream of tartar and lemon juice have been added is recommended by the writers at this site: http://home.howstuffworks.com/how-to-clean-cookware1.htm
