What is the difference between Square d qo vs hom type breakers?
The home type used to be a little less expensive, and they do not have the little red flag when the breaker trips, The qo has the little red flag, which is eaiser to see, which breaker is tripped when you open the panel door the little red flag you can see where with the home style you look for the breaker that is not completly on. To me it was a step backwards with the introduction of the home style breaker we have installed both panels and Q O I prefer. And the breakers are not interchanable from panel to panel

Yes. Many installations have breaker totals higher that the main breaker of the panel. It is worked on a percentage basis. Not all of the breakers will be on at the same time. In a home, on a 100 amp panel the average load is 50 - 60 amps. The 100 amp main breaker is protecting the 100 amp rated panel board. If the load current goes higher that the panel board is rated at, the main breaker will trip to protect the board.
Are there Breakers that are interchangable with Thomas and Betts breakers?
It depends on the specific style of the breaker. Bring your T&B breaker to a hardware store or Home Depot and check with the people in the electric department. Many are now interchangeable with ITE, GE and Square D. However, older T&B breakers are not interchangeable.
What does QP on a square D breaker stand for?
A QP type breaker is made by Siemens for a Siemens distribution panel and should not be interchanged with Square D. A Siemens QP type bolt in breaker will bolt into a SQ distribution panel but it is up to the electrical inspector to make the call as to it being safe or not. Square D breaker types are QO and QB. You might be mistaking the QP for a QB on the breaker. The QO breaker is a plug in breaker usually used in home wiring and the QB is a bolt in breaker. QB breakers are usually specified for industrial and commercial use.
How safe is a 1969 zinsco electrical panel?
They are not at all safe and are junk that needs to be recycled and never installed even in a barn let alone a home. Zinsco company went out of business partly because it was discovered that their breakers did not trip when they were supposed to. For this reason they are nothing but a fire hazard and are not to be trusted to protect the wiring in your home or your family from a fire. Do not use any Zinsco or FPE service panel. Destroy this panel so that no one can ever use it.

No, only Sq D breakers will fit into a Sq D panel. I believe Square D makes at least two styles of breakers. Home and industrial. I have a GE entrance/distribution box that has Square D (home), Murray, Bryant, Westinghouse, and GE breakers, all working together. I hope this helps.

None! Distribution panel designed to use specific type of circuit breakers. It's a NEC violation to install different type of breaker even it fits perfectly.
