No - not the current version. For a cell phone to work in Japan it needs to support the UMTS standard. Currently only the blackberry 8707 models work in Japan. Most so-called "world phones" won't work in Japan. But before you go and buy an 8707, a source of mine says that Blackberry will be releasing the 8-x-x-x or 9-x-x-x series of units soon. All of them will supposedly support UMTS and work globally + Japan. The sneak peaks of this unit make it look like a cross between the Curve and an iPhone (no touch screen). Of course, you will also need to make sure your US carrier (and your contract) supports Japan roaming - but I know for certain that TMobile and AT&T do.
