(see the related question below) Where there is no suspected cervical (neck) injury, the way to open the airway is by use the head tilt-chin lift. Tilt the victims head back with a hand on their forehead and two fingers under their chin, so that the tongue wont get in the way There are two separate types of victims: 1. a 'Medical' patient - i.e. heart attack, stroke, seizure, diabetic. 2. a 'Trauma' patient - i.e. signs of injury, (bleeding, breaks, burns, bites, poisoning. 1. To open the airway of a 'Medical' patient, tilt the head back with the palm of one hand and with the other lift the bony part of the chin, (the mandible should be vertical). - This is called the 'Head Tilt, Chin Lift'. 2. To open the airway of a 'Trauma' patient, sit behind the patients head, place your thumbs on the maxilla bones, (cheek bones), place your index fingers below the ear lobe onto the hinge of the mandible ,(jaw bone), and lift the mandible upward without moving the head - This is called the 'Jaw Thrust Maneuver.

For children 8 years old to just over 1 year you only tilt the head back 2/3 the way back but to make that easier to establish how far that actually is go all the way back and then forward. With infants you really don't move the head very much at all if they are on a firm flat surface as the airway is mostly open.
Head tilt chin lift is used for adults, children and infants.

Steps to opening an airway, shake, Look, listen and feel, first of all youconfirm person is unconscious or unable to breathe then you look at and see if the chest is rising, then you listen to the lungs to establish no rise and fall in the chest, then you take your cheek and feel for and air escaping the lungs. then you place your one hand just under the neck base and grab the under jaw and tilt the head back with a forward thrust to open airway and keep tongue from blocking, then you sweep the area of the mouth with your index finger and your middle finger to establish a clear airway. once you've done that apply your two finger tips to the neck to feel for a pulse then give 1 to 2 breaths depending on assistants. for 1 man CPR its 1 breath to 5 compressions and 2 man its 2 breaths to 15 compressions.
