Yes you can. The scalp is designed so that the hair is naturally covered with the body's natural oils. When over washing, the hair becomes weakened and starts to break.

Most people gain the habit of over washing when teens. The explosion of natural oils caused by hormones happens about that time, so excess oil is usually the excuse for over washing. The body is trying desperately to balance itself after the teen years, so excess oil is usually the body's way of trying to fix what you are doing to your hair.

If the goal is to have shiny hair, then obviously removing the natural oils have the opposite effect. Conditioners and other treatments are simply substitutes for what the body does naturally.

To break the habit, only wash the hair every other day. After a couple of weeks, extend the time to three days. Depending on the hair length, three days to one week is healthy and normal and the hair will return to it's normal lustrous sheen and health.
