It's difficult to find boundaries when it comes to fashion, nowadays. Although, there are some social events, like weddings for instance, where one should follow the protocol more closely.
Having said that, it's TOTALLY acceptable to wear a black dress to a wedding as long as it is a tasteful one (obviously!), not too flamboyant and preferably cocktail size (knee-lenght). I would advise you to play with the accessories, and try to bring a little color into your outfit. For example: a black cocktail dress with a pair of pale pink shoes, a matching clutch and a pearl necklace is a safe and chic combination, very Chanel-like.
Although I'm sure that 99% of people would not find it offensive, it's important that you study the family and the type of guests invited to the wedding. If it's a narrow-minded lot, or the kind of people who are likely to criticise your garment choice, I would advise you to pick something else, but only for your sake! In order to spare you from listening to things that can be upsetting. But I can guarantee you that according to today's fashion do's and don'ts, there is nothing wrong with wearing an appropriate black dress to a wedding!
