Tampons need to be changed every 4-6 hours which can't be done while you're sleeping, the longer you leave tampons the greater the risk of vaginal infections and TSS so regular changing is important. You also need to alternate with pads to allow your vagina a chance to clean itself, and overnight is the most convenient time for you to switch to pads.
