I have fixed a couple over time and what I do is fill it with water and detergent empty it out Then do it again, then Weld it.
Safely? Don't mess with it. Replace it. It's too dangerous to weld it.
when you look at a diesel tank it will have a label on it some where to identify the volume it will hold, when fuel becomes warm it expands and ALLWAYS needs about 15% of free spce to expand safely. If there is no visable tank label how large is the tank(physical dimensions?)
Yes, just do not weld on the fuel tank and unhook the battery to prevent electrical failures.
No. Do not put unleaded gas in a diesel tank.

Yes, you can store diesel fuel in a home tank. It will be important that you store it in a tank designed to hold diesel fuel and that it is stored outside in a location that will not create hazardous or safety concerns. You also need to maintain the tank and the fuel properly.
the diesel tank capacity for a 2001 306 Hdi is approx £80 so around 55litres
