The poem "Solitary Reaper" is one of the marvelous creations by the nature romantic William Wordsworth. One day while walking through the silent, serene Scottish valley, Wordsworth wishes to listen to melodious song of the reaper girl without being disturbed by the onlookers. He simply asks them to "stop here or gently pass". He is so overwhelmed by the song that he compares it with that of the nightingale and cuckoo bird which are supposed to offer solace to the weary band of travelers in the oasis of the Arabian Desert and break the silence of the Hebrides Island respectively. Despite his inability to make out the meaning of the song, he guesses the theme of the song from its melancholy strain. What he appreciates about the song is its tone, its vibrant expressiveness, "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling". Additionally, the final two lines again typically convey the theme of memory and how it comforts him during the pensive mood.

The poem beautifully captures the scene of a lone reaper singing in the fields, resonating with the poet's soul even though he does not understand the words. It highlights the universal language of music and the ability of simple moments in nature to stir profound feelings in individuals.

William Wordsworth's "The Solitary Reaper" is one of the most loved ballads in the corpus of English Literature. The poem "The Solitary Reaper " was first published in Poems, in Two Volumes in 1807.The poem was written after the publication of his Lyrical Ballads and is in iambic tetrameter. The poem bears testimony to his theory how poetry ought to focus on the mundane and the commonplace. His subject here is a Scottish Highland lass who sings while reaping.A highland girl was reaping grain in the field and singing a song at the same time. The poet did not understand the contents of the song as it was in a foreign language. He guessed that it was the tale of old and tragic events of the past. It could also be an account of some recent calamity or mishap. Whatever the theme of the song, it was sung in a beautiful, rich voice. The song seemed to be endless. The poet was bewitched by the thrilling notes of the lonely reaper. The whole valley was ringing with her silvery sound. Even the spring bird Cuckoo could not produce such a magical effect as the maiden's song cost on the poet.

How do you write a critical appreciation of William Wordsworth's solitary reaper?

Minimally, a critical appreciation of a poem should include comments on both the form (or, appearance) of the poem and its content (message or meaning). Thus, minimally, one will want to comment on the four stanzas of eight lines apiece, and the rhyming scheme found therein, of 'The Solitary Reaper,' along with discussion and explanation of the woman working and singing in the fields -- and the poetic narrator's interest in her.
