The city has since been known as Ho Chi Minh City and the largest city in Vietnam. The name change was done in honor of Ho Chi Minh, the central figure in Vietnam's fight for independence against both the French and the Americans. It is worth noting that while the name change occurred officially, most Vietnamese still call the city Saigon (even the the train station is labelled Saigon).
