As far as we know (as no one did an autopsy!) Christ died quite literally of a broken heart. When the Roman soldier pierced his side, he stuck the tip of his spear into Jesus' heart. Jesus had already died, and blood and water gushed out. Now I'm not real good on anatomy or understanding the actual medical terminology, but as I understand it, the fact that water was able to gush out literally meant that Christ's heart had ruptured. He died of a broken heart.

However, Christ declares in the book of John that nothing took His life from Him (John 10:17-18). He laid it down voluntarily. He made a conscious decision to die at that moment. So Christ made a conscious decision to allow His heart to break and die.
