The best way to do it is to lift the rear of the truck so that the shocks are fully extended. make sure you have a replacement differencial gasket and gear lube before hand. remove the differential cover to drain the old gear oil. clean both mating surfaces to prepare for the new gasket. Now, either on the top or on the side of the differential is a screw off type plug. Remove the plug and place an approximate, 3/8 hose on the gear lube bottle and into the differential hole and squeeze the bottle until the lube is just at the bottom of the hole and about to pour out. Replace the plug and you should be good to go.

The abs unit is not located in the differential period. It is located at the brake booster. In easy terms its the thing that has the wires pluged into it near where you put the brake fluid. Also there is a rototion senscor at each wheel.
When changing the fluid in the pan it takes 6 quarts to fully refill the pan, this assumes that the torque converter has not been emptied.

On the 1997 Ford F150, the differential could be in both the front and rear. From 1997 and on Ford used two different axles. Your truck could either have the 8.8 or 9.75 differential. If you have a rear differential you would need to lower your spare tire to have access to it.
you have to unbolt the caliper off the rotor, but not from the brake fluid line.
