Soluble salts of Sodium and Potassium are also concentrated but these are removed by regularly blowing down. Chlorides and oxygen both cause corrosion of the boiler shell. High pH alters the electrochemical potentials and thereby reduces corrosion. Alkaline sodium phosphate and pyrogallol (oxygen scavenger) was/is used for boiler water treatment and Silver nitrate was used to check for chloride presence.
