A small scale business enterprise is one that employs 6 to 29 employees excluding fixed assets land, building and vehicles with cash not exceeding $ 100,000 we have hundreds of the characteristics of small scale business enterprises and these been categorized. Namely they are labour,sector activities, gender of owner and efficiency characteristics.

LABOUR :this is a one man working business and the one man is referred as the proprietor. About 50% of Ghanaian business enterprises are small scale. Family members constitute 25% of the labour and are always unpaid labour who work actively. they some employ hired labour which constitute 12.5% of its labour.

And apprenticeship and trainees also provides 12.5% of its labour. the advantage attached to this is that one do not need huge sums of capital to begin.

In addition is the SECTOR ACTIVITY CHARACTERISTICS. This category is mainly and mostly engaged in retailing, trading and manufacturing. NB. in Ghana my country most are into retailing. This category depend largely on the availability of raw materials,taste and consumption pattern of consumers and level of development of export market.

Furthermore, we have the GENDER OF OWNER. It is about a particular sex being majority in a small scale business enterprise. Majority of these people are females and are engaged in trading in Ghana. they are mostly home base are not captured or considered by official statistics.Business are found in front of houses. The have lower chance of accessing financial assistance because they lack equilateral for loans.

Finally is the EFFICIENCY CHARACTERISTICS. This category lay emphasis on labour productivity. every industry is sustainable if they are able to increase productivity.
