If yours is on, it could be many many things...but I recently had mine come on because the thermostat was out/going out of it. I took it to my local auto-zone, they will do a free scan and give you a good idea of where the problem lies.
Like I said, my 2004 envoy's check engine light was on because of the thermostat, after driving it for 10 or 15 minutes (enough to get it warmed up) the temperature gauge would only reach about 180. After having the thermostat replaced it now gets to 210 degrees-where it should be.

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
