The problem is a bad air flow sensor. These were poorly designed and should have been discontinued a long time ago. These are the BOSCH style that the old Nissans from the 80's used. They contain a thin hair-like wire internally to measure air flow etc. They fail causing the engine to misfire and run lean. The car may jerk, want to die at acceleration,or even have dead spots in the throttle. Replace this and your car will run fine.

GAs cap is more than likeky the problem, tighten the cap remove the emc fuse to reset the check engine light/ or tighten the cap and then take neg battery cable off for 5 mins to reset light
