The conflict arose when the U.S. government attempted to force the Nez Perce to move to a smaller reservation in Idaho, leading to a series of battles as the tribe, led by Chief Joseph, sought to resist relocation. The war ended with the surrender of the Nez Perce after a long and arduous retreat.
