Cholesterol is found in the membrane. It prevents lower temperatures from inhibiting the fluidity of the membrane and prevents higher temperatures from increasing fluidity. It stabilizes the membrane. Only animal cells have cholesterol in their membranes.

Cholesterol has several functions.

1 It helps to stiffen the membrane, making it less soft.

2 It also helps the membrane to remain relatively fluid (as in "fluid mosaic model").

3 It also provides (lipid rafts) a suitable molecular environment for certain membrane proteins.

4 It makes the nearby portion of a cell membrane less permeable to small molecules that are soluble in water.

Cholesterol also functions in intracellular transport, cell signaling and nerve conduction

It limits water intake, as it is hydrophobic. If we didn't have cholesterol our cells would take on too much water and burst! (Plants do not have cholesterol. Instead they have big, strong cell walls to stop bursting! :) ). However, too much cholesterol would limit water intake, causing our bodies to work less efficiently. Also excess cholesterol can block veins and arteries, leading to cardiac arrests!

Eat well, exercise well, you will be fine :)

it has an important impact on the fluidity of the membrane. Too little of cholesterol will result in the plasma membrane to become fragile.

Cholesterol in a cell membrane gives stability to the membrane. Otherwise, the membrane is too "wobbly". This one reason why we have to have some cholesterol in our diets
