Cindy, I'm very sorry to hear of your mother's cancer. It sounds like she has already been through a lot. What to expect depends on a lot of things. The first consideration is whether or not the cancer began in the lung (true lung cancer) or somewhere else and spread to the lungs (for example, colon cancer that spreads to the lungs-this is called metastatic cancer). True lung cancer can be very small to quite extensive, and the prognosis varies widely based upon the extent of the disease. If the cancer is metastatic, the expected duration of survival is relatively short. Additionally, different types of cancer, even from the same organ, can behave differently, and some are more aggressive than others. Precise numbers in terms of time are difficult to predict, although some parameters can be given. Her physician should be able to provide these numbers for you based upon the specifics of the cancer itself. You mentioned she is otherwise healthy, which is a great beginning, and it seems that she has a great support system in you.
