For example, a lawyer can work for the community as a public defender who defends clients who cannot afford an attorney on their own. The kind of pay a person can receive as a civil servant really depends on the kind of job that person does for the government. For example, a new US postal worker can expect to make a starting salary of somewhere between $14 and $20 an hour. The head of a government department, on the other hand, can make up to $96,000 a year. Due to competitive salaries and very good job security, positions in civil service are highly sought after. A person will have to do a number of things to attain a job in civil service. First of all, a person must have a relatively clean criminal record. Secondly, due to competitiveness and the specificity of certain government positions, a college degree will also probably be required. Most civil servants will also have to pass something called the civil service exam. This exam tests a person’s knowledge of the government as well as information related to the position for which they are applying.
