If the battery voltage is 11 volts, or greater, then the next most common cause for clicking is a loose or corroded connection anywhere between the battery and/or including the starter itself. Corrosion can occur on the contact surfaces inside of a connection, and be invisible without disconnecting the connector(s) to observe and remove it. These two are the most common causes.
However, clicking/chattering could also indicate:
There are probably other causes that I've overlooked at the moment. Without doing a "hands on troubleshooting" of your vehicle's starting electrical system, no one here can specifically identify the precise cause.
You need to first fully charge the battery and try again. If that solves the problem, then you need to determine why the battery voltage was too low.
If charging the battery does not solve the clicking problem, then the problem will be in other areas of the starting electrical system.
If your car makes a clicking sound when you try to start it, try to jump the battery. If that starts it, check the electrical system and if it was the battery, replace the battery. If jumping it does not fix it, have a mechanic look at it.
My 2003 Chevrolet Suburban 280 hp engine is making metal clicking sounds when I accelerate. It gets worse the faster I go. The battery went dead and had to be jumped two days ago. The car starts fine but then it makes this clicking sound when I put it in drive and go. It happens in park also. What is this?
1-Could be that you battery is dead. There will be enough juice to run the radio and the dome light but not enough to crank the motor. 2-Could be the starter Try jumping your battery first. If it starts, it's probably your battery. Make sure both of your connections are good on your battery.
if clicking but not starting dead battery if it starts it's one of the many relays that open and close during startup
That could be the alternator or the battery. Try jump starting your car with another car's battery. If it still does not start, it is probably the alternator. If it starts, your battery is dead.
That usually means your cables are loose and aren't making good contact. The clicking is the arcing of the spark. Tighten your battery cable ends completely and make sure they can't spin on the posts at all.
the battery
AnswerIf the battery's dead it could be the alternator or a bad battery. If not, the starter. Try jumping it. If it starts the starter's OK. Then investigate the alternator and battery.Does it turn over but not start..?? There is a difference. Doesn't turn over would most likely be the battery, which is typically followed by a clicking noise. That would be the starter solenoid trying to engage but the battery doesn't have enough power to do so.If jumping it starts it right up, let it run for 10 or 15 minutes then (while running) check the voltage at the battery terminals. If it's above 14 volts, the alternator is doing it's job and the battery is dead. If the voltage is less than 14, then the alternator needs to be replaced.
Its likely either the battery connections (terminals) are dirty, or where they connect is...or the battery while showing a charge is bad when on a load. If it starts with a jump from another car...it's the battery.
What happens when the a/c is off, now. your alternator is bad or a bad/poor connection in the batt-alt-gnd circits. woody
either clean and tighten cable connections or get battery tested. if not the battery, it is the solenoid or the starter If it is clicking and not starting at first, but starts after a few tries, its your starter taking a dump. Replace it.
It could be your battery. Try honking your horn and hold it down...see if it sounds strong the whole time, or if it starts strong and then starts to fade out. It could also be the starter. The battery is easier to fix, especially if you have AAA. Good luck!
