Lowland Tropical Rain forest (Amazon Rainforest) east of the Andes, and in northwest Ecuador west of the Andes. West of the Andes the biomes become drier as one moves south. Northwest Ecuador has a tropical rainforest biome like the east, while further south the biome becomes tropical savanna. Biomes vary tremendously in the Andes; both the east and west slopes of the Andes feature montane rainforest biomes. The highest elevations in the Andes feature an alpine climate. The central highlands features a cool tropical highland biome mainly featuring grassland with isolated stands of polylepis (a member of the rose family), cinchona pubescens and other highland plants and trees.
