After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, US Naval commander Chester W. Nimitz was appointed to take charge of all US naval operations in the Pacific theater. He was highly successful and within four years defeated Japan's powerful navy and their air power support.
Not until he replaced Admiral Kimmel as Cincus in December, 1941, after Pearl Harbor. The unfortunate acronym "Cincus", meaning "Commander in Chief US" was confusing - the president is THE Commander in Chief - and was probably supposed to reflect the idea that much of the strength of the US Navy was in the Pacific. But with a two ocean war now underway, this dreadful acronym was changed and Nimitz became CincPac - "Commander in Chief Pacific" (only of the Navy and Marine Corps though). Nimitz actually had two jobs - besides commanding the US Pacific Fleet, he also was the commander of the Central Pacific Theater of Operation. (The Pacific was divided into two "Theaters" - mostly to give something to General MacArthur to do - MacArthur was in Australia after escaping from the Philippines, so the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations was carved out to give him an area of responsibility commensurate with his prestige). As CincPac and as Theater Commander in the Central Pacific, Nimitz, who was largely unknow outside the Navy before the war, became world famous. An entire "class" of modern nuclear powered aircraft carriers is the "Nimitz Class", to commemorate him and his great leadership.
Admiral Chester W. Nimitz was CINCPAC (Commander in Chief Pacific) from just after the Pearl Harbor attack, throughout the rest of the war. Nimitz wore two hats - he was the head of the US Navy in the Pacific, and, he was a Theater Commander. The Pacific was divided into two Theaters of Operations. The Central Pacific theater, and all Allied personnel in it, were under Nimitz. Army General Douglas MacArthur commanded the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations, and all Allied personnel there. From time to time Nimitz had army troops under his command, in his role as Theater Commander. Similarly, a few times MacArthur had Marines (which are a part of the US Navy) and always had some naval forces under his control.
The Allies divided the world into Theaters of Operations, of which there were two in the Pacific, the Central Pacific Theater and the Southwest Pacific Theater. There was also a China-Burma-India Theater. US Army General Douglas MacArthur was commander of the Southwest Pacific Theater. US Navy Admiral Chester Nimitz commanded the Central Pacific, and he was also commander of the US Pacific Fleet. Nimitz usually had the six divisions of US Marines, and Army troops as well under his command, plus US Army Air Force units. British General Lord Louis Mountbatten commanded the China-Burma-India Theater.
