A committee is a relatively small group of people that meets to deal with an issue or group of issues. It is usually subject to some larger organization, to which it is responsible. It might be empowered to make decisions, to do research and make recommendations, or to coordinate or manage efforts.
A committee usually consists of a chairperson, a secretary, and other members. Members of committees tend to develop more expertise in the work of the committee than members of a larger body would, and the committee structure can take advantage of that expertise.
Committees often meet regularly. Some committees only meet as needed, and such a committee may be able to handle problems as they arise better than a larger group could.
