The common name for oncorhyncus nerka is the sockeye salmon. Also known as the red salmon the sockeye is the most commercially important of the Pacific salmon species. Ranging from the Pacific Norhwest to Norhwestern Alaska, Eastern Siberia and Japan these fish spawn in the lake or river of their birth to which they return after a few years spent at sea.
