One of the most significant reasons why the colonists were against the British taxes was because they had no say over them, as they were not represented in the British government. The United States Declaration of Independence was ratified on July 4, 1776.
James Otis, Jr. is famous for having said, 'taxation without representation is tyranny.' Otis was a political activist, and his profession was that of a lawyer.
Because most agricultural states like in the south were suffering from enormous taxation and they were losing their representation in the Senate. They knew that if Lincoln was elected they would suffer even more and so they decided they wanted their own government.
The question above represents a common misunderstanding regarding the reason for the colonies resistance to taxation from Great Britain. Most Americans today believe that it was an issue of how high the tax was and the burden that it would have placed upon the people. This is incorrect. The colonies resistance to taxation is directly connected to the issue of internal vs. external taxation. Internal taxation is taxes placed upon the people by representatives of the people. External taxation is taxes imposed upon a people that has no representation in the body that makes the decision. James Otis is claimed to have stated that, "Taxation without representation is tyranny". The colonists believed that laws imposed on a people that have no voice is a form of tyranny. The issue wasn't with a percentage, the issue was with liberty.
The Sugar Act was hated by colonists because most of them were very poor. This act required taxes to be paid on many popular items.
Taxation without representation came about due to the distance between England and the American colonies. Because the Colonies were ruled by England, English Parlaiment made decisions concerning the items shipped. Most of these items had excessive taxes added on because there was no one in Parlaiment that represented the colonists.
They resented having to pay taxes without the ability to participate in government. Hence the saying "No taxation without representation". ---- American colonists felt that the taxes that they had to pay were unfair because of a few reasons. Every little thing was being taxed, including stamps, tea, food, and trade. What was most frustrating was that there was nothing they could do about it. And it was clear that they did not want to pay without having some say in what is going on with these taxes, thus the term was said, "No taxation without representation." Did you know that the first government of the United States failed? ~Apple Juice
A better question would be "do graphs have to do with calculus?" The answer is yes, many concepts in calculus are best understood by looking at graphs. While most concepts in calculus can be taught and learned without graphs, using only numeric and algebraic (analytical) representations, graphs add a visual representation that helps students understand calculus concepts in more depth.
