A Pulmonary Infarction is the death of a small area of lung resulting from pulmonary embolism. It occurs in a small, dead-end pulmonary artery and often causes pain in the back or chest.PI is an an infrequent consequence of Pulmonary Edema(< 10% of cases). It is sometimes due to thrombosis in situ of the pulmonary arteries as might occur in congenital heart disease associated with severe pulmonary hypertension or in hematologic disorders (eg, sickle cell anemia).

The pulmonary artery is the one which carries blood from the right ventricle to the lungs. It is the only artery in the body that carries deoxygenated blood. The blood is carried at a pressure, usually less than 30mmHg. So, if the pulmonary artery was to be cut and bleed, the person would die when blood volume fell below the minimum necessary. This wouldn't take long, either. Between actual blood loss, and the sudden decrease in pressure such an injury would cause death in approximately 2 minutes

There are not valves in the pulmonary artery or the aorta. However there are valves between these and the heart. Between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery there is a valve referred to as the pulmonary semilunar valve. Between the left ventricle and the aorta there is a valve called the aortic semilunar valve.
The pulmonary artery takes blood from the right ventricle into the lungs; the pulmonary vein collects blood from the lungs back to the left atrium of the heart.
