Like many pine trees, the Virginia pine has almost an entire ecosystem of its own. Animals depend on it for shelter and possibly food, in a woodpeckers case, birds use it for their nests, insects live in it, the pine's roots keep the soil from eroding, and it also gives off new oxygen. Without a single tree, as many as 5000 living creatures could die. ~Ares
a pine tree can live up to 125 years usually but some are know to live up to more than 300 years. some die young because they get a certain ground disease.
Thalia did not die in the Percy Jackson series. However, when she, Annabeth, Luke, and Grover where at Half-Blood Hill, Hades sent a bunch of monsters after Thalia. She told Grover to take Annabeth and Luke to Camp Half-Blood while she fought off the monsters. The monsters started killing her, and her father, Zeus, turned her into a pine tree before she could die. The pine tree on Half Blood Hill was Thalia, and her spirit protected the camp with the magical border. When they put the Golden Fleece on the pine tree (end of the second book, The Sea of Monsters) the Fleece did it's work to well and turned Thalia back into a human.
