Could commoners become MPs

In UK MPs have to be commoners. A Lord cannot sit in the House of Commons, unless, like Tony Benn, for example, (Anthony Wedgewood Benn, formerly Lord Stansgate & father of current Cabinet Minister of Hilary Benn) the peerage is renounced.
