The Egyptians could live without Amon-Ra (aka Ra), but not for very long. The god of chaos, Apophis, would eventually figure out Ra's absense and would try to strike. The absense of Ra would also create havoc in the afterlife. The souls of the dead would not be able to find their way to the place in which the weighing of the heart was conducted without Ra's guidance. So basically, if Ra were to be gone, the Egyptians would suffer badly.
